Early Life:

Gordon James Ramsey was born November 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. When he was five his family moved to and he was raised in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is the second of four children with an older sister and a younger brother and sister. His mom was a nurse. His dad held a number of jobs including swimming pool manager, welder, and shopkeeper. During his childhood, his family moved constantly due to the aspirations and job failures of his father. His father was a sometimes violent alcoholic and womanizer. At the age of 16, Ramsay moved out of his family’s home and into an apartment in Banbury.

Ramsay played football and was first chosen for the under-14 team when he was 12. He played for Warwickshire. His football career was marked by injuries. He tried out for the Rangers, the club he rooted for as a boy, and trained with them for a few months in mid-1984, but seriously injured the cartilage in one of his knees during training.

By the time his ended his football career, Ramsay’s interest in cooking had already begun, and rather than be known as the football player with the gammy knee, at age 19 Ramsay began paying more serious attention to his culinary education. He attended North Oxfordshire Technical College, where he studied Hotel Management.

Career:

In the mid-1980s, Ramsay worked at the Wroxton House Hotel as a commis chef. From there he went on to run the kitchen and 60-set dining room at the Wickham Arms.

He then moved to London, where he worked in a series of restaurants before landing a job working for the temperamental at Harveys. He worked at Harveys for two years and 10 months before growing tired of White’s “rages and the bullying and violence.”

Gordon Ramsay decided to study French cuisine and went to work for Albert Roux and Le Gavroche in Mayfair, where he met Jean-Claude Breton, now his maitre d-hotel at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. After working at Le Gavroche for a year, Roux invited Ramsay to work with him as his number two at Hotel Diva, a ski resort in the French Alps. From there, then 23-year-old Ramsay moved to Paris to work with Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon, both Michelin-starred chefs. He continued his training in France for three years. He then took a year break from the physical and mental stress of the kitchens to work as a private chef on the yacht Idlewild out of Bermuda. While working on the private yacht he learned about Italian cuisine during trips to Sicily and Sardinia.

Upon his return to London in 1993, Ramsay was offered the position of head chef under chef-patron Pierre Koffmann, at the three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire in Chelsea. Not long after, offered to set him up with a head chef position and a 10% share in the Rossmore. The restaurant was renamed Aubergine and went on to win its first Michelin star fourteen months later. In 1997, Aubergine won its second Michelin star. Despite the restaurant’s success, a dispute with Ramsay’s business owners, who wanted to turn Aubergine into a chain, and Ramsay’s dream of running his own restaurant led to his leaving the partnership in July 1998.

In 1998, Ramsay opened his own restaurant in Chelsea, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay.  The restaurant gained its third Michelin star in 2001, making Ramsay the first Scot to achieve that feat.  In 2011, The Good Food Guide listed Restaurant Gordon Ramsay as the second-best restaurant in the UK.

From there, his empire expanded rapidly. Ramsay is the winner of three Catey Awards, (including newcomer of the year, 1995 and Chef of the Year, 2000). Ramsay also is in a partnership with father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson, in Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited, which purchased three English Pubs and converted them into restaurant/bar establishments. In 2005, the Fox network brought Ramsay to American audiences with a U.S. version of Hell’s Kitchen. A U.S. version of Kitchen Nightmares was also aired on Fox. Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back replaced Kitchen Nightmares on Fox.
